Portland Monthly creates an issue dedicated to exploring the greener side of city life
PROJECT OVERVIEW: Portland is a city that can legit own the moniker Green City, USA, which is what we called it on this groovy cover of Portland Monthly. As the acting editor-in-chief, I saw an opportunity to set a new vision for environmental storytelling. We would move beyond the tropes that can make environmental stories … kind of a bummer. Writers tapped their own passions and profiled a commune in Tryon Creek, looked at 15 Portland-grown, cutting-edge environmental products and technologies, and wrote stories about plucky homeowners trying to bring wild, native nature into their backyards. I paddled hidden sloughs, lakes, and water trails within the city limits. The result was a lighter take on environmental storytelling that proved journalistic rigor can live alongside a sense of humor.
